Pressure is mounting on the Tasmanian Government to legalise the medicinal use of cannabis in the wake of Victoria's historic decision to become the first state in Australia to do so.
The Victorian Government passed the Access to Medicinal Cannabis Bill 2015 yesterday, giving patients legal access to the drug in exceptional circumstances.
Children with severe epilepsy will be given first access to the drug, grown and cultivated by the Government, from early 2017
In December 2015, Tasmania signed up to grow marijuana as part of medical trials in New South Wales and in the Opposition has promised it will immediately move to decriminalise cannabis use and possession for medicinal purposes if it wins back government.
Today, federal and state Labor and the Tasmanian Greens have all called on the Hodgman Liberal Government to get serious about the issue and follow Victoria's lead.
Tasmanian Labor Senator Carol Brown said Tasmanians wanting access medicinal cannabis should not face discrimination based on where they lived.
"Tasmanians with life-threatening illnesses must not be forced to go to Victoria to get legal access to medicinal cannabis," she said.
Tasmanian Greens primary industries spokeswoman Andrea Dawkins said Premier Will Hodgman could learn a lot from the compassionate and swift action of Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on the issue.
"Will Hodgman should be doing everything he can to follow in his Victorian counterpart's footsteps," she said.
"He must stand up to his Cabinet and party colleagues and do the right thing."
