Tap root up or down?

The last three seeds in water have sprouted but lost the first two ?? I have read on how to put seeds in the hole. Latest seed is showing a crack and some white root inside. Has not come out yet. Put seed in warm water yesterday.

I put the tap root down with the top barely covered. Never had a problem. I understand the logic but I found what works for me

So do I need to keep the soil wet in the lil peat pot that I put the seed it? I put a plastic bottle over it to keep in moisture. I mist the inside of the bottle as well. Warm soil is critical?

Keep the soil moist but don't over water just mist and cover like you said. 70'sF is good for environment

I put seed in moist soil in a 2” peat pot. I put peat pot in the ceramic mug I used with seed and water to sprout seed. Put tea cup saucer over the top, to keep moisture in. It is near a floor register in this ole ancient house. I try to be careful with a tweezers when positioning seed in hole. Sometimes it slips out and I cannot see the seed’s orientation in hole. I am leaving it be. I tried to change position of the last two seeds/tap roots. My wife said to leave em be. Should have listened to her. ( this was to be HER project. Doubt she knows what I do from reading here. Thanks growers. )

Note: If you germinate in water & paper towel, don't leave the seeds at the bottom of the glass for too long - they will drown without oxygen

Here are some examples assuming you are planting a seed right into the medium - a natural and less risky way to germinate:



Notice the short tap root in all the pictures.

When you germinate this way, like in "nature", there is gravity - so the tap root hooks and grows "naturally".

If you germinate in paper towel - there is gravity - but the tap root can't grow through the paper towel through the plate and then into the soil

Also, if you germinate in paper towel - the tap root may grow long and straight -or long and hooked - who knows - roll the dice - germinating in paper towel is not "natural".

If you have a straight 2" tap root from paper towel - plant it tap root down - otherwise "rut roh"
