Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL - LED

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

And that tap root was trying to grow straight up. I'm actually feeling more and more confident after studying the picture closer. I can see much evidence of vitality that wasn't there when I set it upright. It's driving me crazy to be all the way across town while my little one is striving to live.

The taproot always starts straight up, then re-orients itself straight down.....it's called Gravitropism. Roots exhibit positive Gravitropism....they grow INTO gravity, while shoots demonstrate negative gravitropism....they grow AWAY from gravity.

It's normal and the way Nature intended it to grow.

The secret the really healthy seedlings is thus:

1. proper environment, germination in BRIGHT light, temps and humidity all in spec.
2. myco
3. do not handle the roots, do not expose them to light. (no paper towel)

Sure, you can break these rules and the plants will grow...they are tough and will adapt. But if you want something special, and you want to avoid the weak ones, germinate in living soil, under bright light and simply be patient!

Sue I had one that done the same as yours, I was growing in an aerogarden at the time. one had popped but the other was, what I thought to be a dud. I also used a plastic dome which I covered in gaffer tape to cut the light out. Anyway I popped the top & saw a tap root about in inch or so sticking out the sponge. I managed to split the sponge & turn it round. It survived, for a while at least( it was my first go at growing) I'm just about ready to harvest her sister :)
This may be of interest, this what I found when reading up on seed starting:
Seed orientation during planting isn’t something that most gardeners pay attention to, but perhaps they should as it could improve the germination rates and vigor of their garden. After all, we gardeners spend a lot of time planning, preparing, planting and tending our gardens, so why not take a tiny extra step that might give us much better results? Are you cognizant of how you plant your seeds, what direction they go into the soil?

All seeds have a built-in ability to orient themselves correctly and grow according to gravity. The roots will grow toward the pull of gravity and the stem or shoot will grow up and away from it. This is known as geotropism.

The radicle, or part of the seed that was attached to the parent plant, is where the root will emerge from. If the seed orientation has it pointed down, the new root will grow straight down with no wasted energy. If it is pointed upwards, the root and stem has to change direction which uses a lot of energy stored in the seed and decreases the vigor.

Most seeds are somewhat asymmetrical and are not likely to be planted with the radicle end up during natural dispersion or planting but can be when planted by humans, either by mistake or lack of knowledge. In natural systems, flat or oblong seeds will tend to be deposited in a horizontal position, so the stem and root will only need to change direction by 90° and won’t waste a lot of energy. Gardeners can help this system along when planting with proper seed orientation.

Round Radish Seed

Let’s take a look at some different seeds to see how best to plant them. Small and round seeds can be planted in almost any direction, as it is difficult to see where the radicle is and their small size doesn’t affect their orientation during germination as much as others. As a rule of thumb it is best to plant seeds at a depth of 2 – 3 times their diameter.

Seeds with points such as watermelon, cucumber, squash, pumpkin and corn should be planted point or radicle down. This gives the seed a head start as the root will emerge from the radicle and head straight down, while the shoot or stem will work toward the sun.
Watching in anticipation Sue :)

Thank you for that valuable resource information Shaun.

Hi yall. :)

Ive been reading and keeping up. Congratulations on your newborn baby girls, Sweetsue. Im so very pleased for you.

I was talking to my husband earlier about the SWICKing that I plan to do in my own grow, but I have a question that you, Sweetsue, may or may not be able to answer. If you cant, perhaps someone else will have an answer. It occurred to me that if I use this watering system, which I really want to do, then how will I give the soil the nutrients they need? Im not using LOS soil. Im going to use FoxFarm Happy Frog with perlite mixed in. I dont think (sometimes doing my own thinking is not a good thing, lol) putting the nutrients in the reservoir is a very good idea, so how will I get the nutrients in the soil? Gently from the top, I guess?

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Sorenna, the easiest way to do this is to have a spot with a drain basin where you can set the plants when you top drench. Lift them off the SWICK, feed until you have runoff and then reset them. Doing so gives you ample opportunity to scrape off exiting roots as well. Something as simple as a low plant stand set in a low tray to trap runoff will suffice. The plant gets fed and you don't compromise the reservoirs.

With LOS you can get away with gentle drenching and depending on the biota to move things around as needed. When you feed the plant directly with chemical nutes I would think it would be to your benefit to water slowly and thoroughly. Be forewarned, they get heavy. :laughtwo:

You still drench the soil from the surface. You just might not apply as much (so mix accordingly) when applying teas, etc because you don't need to drench the whole pot from top to bottom anymore.

Yay! Thank you. Thats what Ill do then. Okay, I wont be doing it, but it will get done. It doesnt matter that they will be heavy, my husband would make a great Hulk if I dipped him in green dye. hehe Im pretty sure a man who can carry a washer by himself can pick up my darling girls. :D

I figured as much Sorenna. When's the move?

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Should be in the next couple of weeks. They are still working on it, so have to wait for them to finish.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I'm home now and the Berry Bomb is nothing but a shriveled hulk on the surface. Ah well. I really wanted to do another Bomb seed, but that leaves more room for other plantings. I'm trying to decide on what seeds to purchase. I think I can swing 4 maximum this week. Buying seeds one at a time is crazy, eh? It won't always be so. One more round of soil building supplies and I should be good to go for a couple years at least. That frees up lots of money for seeds.

I'm going to start an enzyme tea for both pots. It's been too long since they had one. Follow that up with a small ACT to recharge the leftover soil so I have something to plant seeds in. I should be ready to start with the bag seeds from New Years by Sunday. That bag was actually quite good, and the entire time we were smoking it and finding all those seeds I kept thinking about how much better it could be in LOS. Now we'll see.

The light will be delivered tomorrow. :slide: They tried to deliver today but I was with Dale. Tomorrow I will sit outside and wait for it to arrive. As I wait I will make a new plan for this grow and begin pulling out pots for the tiers. I can run across the street for Dixie cups in the morning. Excited!!!

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

ProMix HP Ingredients

Canadian sphagnum peat moss (65-75%)
Perlite
Limestone
Wetting agent
MYCORRHIZAE PREMIER TECH (Glomus intraradices)

I bought pro-mix dh or bx (something non-myco.) This takes my water up from 6.5 to over 7.0 . Stunted my grits.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Come again? What did what to your water?

I planted in a cheaper grade pro-mix and perlite with some bat guana.
Water in 6.5. Water out over 7.0 ph.
I have some clones from last May that are spindly scrawny things with only a top fringe of green.

Now that I ph down to below 6.0 they are finally taking off.

I did the same mix then added to an equal part Dr. EARTH potting soil. Ph goes up as water pass through it, and seeds planted in November and December are under 3 inches tall. Argggggghhhh. Responding well to lower ph water.

Something was seriously wrong with that batch of Promix.

I like to pH balance the soil with lots of mineral buffers and myko. Then, it doesn't matter at all what the Ph of the water is.

But I don't test runoff for pH! You're not getting an accurate test of the soil Ph, but you are getting an accurate test of whatever portion of the soil that leaches out, which isn't exactly what we want.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Woot! Berry bomb has 'exploded' out of the soil, she has green there for sure SS! :) Now just som TLC and they'll both be rocking on :)

Nooo :( a minute of silence for the BB guys. As you said though SS you now have options as to what now to grow along side the dark devil, very exciting! :)
