Yawn! Tomorrow comes on quickly when you stay up until 2. Time for lights out. You all entertain yourselves. I'll catch up in the morning.

Night all. :green_heart:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

it appears I should. I have a bit growing currently. I will drop into your thread with some highlight picks from my garden tomorrow.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I have the peat moss, I prefer pumice over perlite, limestone is an easy find, I have Zeolite, which acts as a wetting agent and I have mycorrhizae on hand. I should be able to make my own version of Promix with little effort.

If you were building say, a cubic foot of soil this way, how much limestone do you think would be added? That's a question for anyone who cares to jump in.

I don't use them so I'm unfamiliar with all these "brand name soils" as I have been making my own potting/veg-garden soil for the better part of 30yrs.

Generally it is difficult to give an exact measure of how much this to add to this much that since there are quite a few variables that affect the end result, e.g. grain size and chemical composition of the limestone (limestone or dolomite) will affect speed and level at which a certain pH value is achieved. The particle size and general composition (origin) of peat does the same in the opposite pH direction.

On the other hand it is quite easy to give an average guideline to how much of this to add to this much of that since the resulting soil is really very forgiving and has inherently good self stabilizing characteristics.

I started on a writeup of my base soil mixture, methods and reasoning behind it but after a few pages I realised this is probably not exactly suited for this thread as a "quick" answer to the question. So, I'll spare you the details and do the writeup as part of my next grow journal (pending the arrival of spring) :rolleyes3

My quick answer then: I use about 6cl limestone (crushed to sand/powder)per 30 litres of peat (soil size and consistency), which equates to about 0.25 US cup / cubic foot. Results in a finished soil with a pH range of 5.6-6.2 which I find works great for most crops.

Vis vobiscum

Edit: :hmmmm::oops: This of course will result in more than 1 cubic foot of soil as you add additional components like compost etc.

Daily Update: Sweet Dark Devil Auto (Day 3) & Bomb Berry Bomb Auto (Hoping for Day 1)

Dark Devil is plugging away, getting her feet firmly planted.

image22005.jpg

Her companion got herself all twisted around. I got to digging around very gently with a toothpick this morning and found her trying to grow down instead of up.

image22006.jpg

I wish I'd gone digging a couple days ago. Not sure if this one will make it or not. Let's give it a day in the light and see what happens. The tendency to survive is strong, so I'll give her a chance to recover. I certainly couldn't kill her once I found her, now could I? She's upright and through the soil line into the light. From here it's a universal force beyond me that will save her. Positive thoughts everyone.

I spritzed them with plain water. I'll top off reservoirs later today. It's nice that the reservoirs hold enough water for two or three days of wicking.

On to my day. Have a great one yourselves. Spread some joy while you play with life today. :laughtwo::green_heart:

:Namaste:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Here is the mix I plan on using based off of Blue Jay's recommendation:
Equal parts sphagnum peat, pumice/lava rock, and Bu's Blend Biodynamic Compost

1 Cup each Per Cu ft:
Kelp meal
Neem meal
Crustation meal

5% bio char of total volume (ran out of money here)

4-6 cups Rock Dust (Basalt)

I did have one question. Could I add gypsum and oyster shell flour into this mix at any rate or will that throw the balance off? Maybe substitute a cup of each in for 2 cups of the rock dust? 4 cups rock dust, one cup oyster flour, one cup gypsum?

I have them left over from reconditioning some old used pro mix (a 10' x 10' bed full) my friend let me take off his hands to re-use in my veggie garden.

Deflectohead

Crustacean Meal - Calcium Carbonate + Chitin

Oyster Shell Powder - pure Calcium Carbonate

Gypsum - Elemental Calcium + Sulfur Oxide

Mix these materials in equal amounts and we'll call this your 'liming mix'

Now your recipe will be this

1 cup kelp meal
1 cup neem meal
1 cup liming mix

CC

I don't think I would substitute it for the rock dust. If anything I'd play with the crustacean meal portion, if at all. That crustacean meal is pretty relevant to the mix too.

Have you presented this question to the crew on BlueJay's thread? Years of experience sit round that table. I'd ask them.

He does study hard, doesn't he? Has a good grasp of the ideas behind LOS too. Makes me proud to hear him get excited about growing.

two little turtle heads poking out is much better than one little turtle head pokin out,, Yay sue,, glad for your turtles,, they didn't turtle one bit,, cheers

Sue, that wasn't my question, that was a question asked in bluejay's thread, and the bold part is CC's answer. I thought it was relevant to your question about how much limestone to use for pH balance.

Ahhh, I misunderstood. Come to think of it I probably have that in my notes somewhere. :laughtwo: Thanks 36. You saved me a lot of digging.

Hmmm, that started a cascade effect in the back of my brain. I'll grab my notes on the way out and work on it while bus riding.

Before I dash - I peeked in earlier and thought "Oh well, it's dead." When I came back after my shower to document it and zoomed in on the picture ..... is that a hint of green I see there? Am I being ridiculously optimistic?

image22009.jpg

I carefully covered up the open area around the tap root that I couldn't see before I zoomed in on this picture. Once again I give it over to powers greater than mine. I left it with a double dose of loving energy and now I really must get out to the bus stop.

Later. :green_heart:

This may be one of those anecdotal teaching moments. :cheesygrinsmiley:

In dead soil, that sprout probably doesn't survive ... but in LOS it probably does, thanks to the biota.

We'll see. :hmmm:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I'm still trying to get used to the high one gets from medibles. I wasn't prepared for it to feel so different. When I combust the effects are immediate. It's what my body and mind have been conditioned to. With edibles it creeps and suddenly you feel ... well, in my case I would call it "normal". The trick is working out the dosing. What I'm looking for is what I know will take the edge off for him and carry him a few hours on a dose, without running through my entire harvest. I have the advantage of having smoked side-by-side with him for 34 years. I need to do some calculating.

Last night I did another batch of brownies. I thought about what Rad had said about a film canister in a batch. I gave some thought to how much effect I was after per slice, closed my eyes and pulled out 2 grams of prime Buddha Buds.

image22016.jpg

I broke it all apart in a dish and decarboxylated at 225 F for 30.

image22017.jpg

It had the most amazing texture when you broke it up. After cooking it I broke it down further into a powder and added every tiny bit (scraped the dish with a knife to get trichomes off) into the brownie mix.

I had one slice for breakfast around 8. It's now 12:30 and I am still quite buzzed, but have been functional and productive throughout. I started by cleaning the stairwell on our side of the building. Now I can feel good about being a responsible person again.

I think if he takes one slice right off that may keep him going for the day. I brought another half slice just in case.

Life's one big science experiment. :laughtwo::green_heart:

If you look real close in the picture you can see color coming into the stem. That surprised me further. Maybe Greytail. Maybe.....

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I think it would be awesome if that lil sprout began to thrive  If it does it would be an excellent example of the benefits that LOS offers! Right On Sue!

As far as your bagseed question 4 would be my calculation. The probability of Fem is 50/50 so you might think 2 but in probs and stats you learn error and deviation and 2 would fall into the deviation and you could likely end up with 2 males same goes for 3. 4 is the min number that should guarantee a 1 Fem.

However, this bag seed is not of the autoflower variety I presume. So you would have a lighting schedule issue in your closet I think.

I hope you and Dale have a good day :)
:peace:

You would think that, wouldn't you? :laughtwo: Since I'm running the closet on 11/13 from now on that no longer matters. WooHoo!!!

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I'm not worried about it. I would have come up today anyways.

Remember, before you see the emerging cotyledon, the tap root is usually 4-5 inches long....

And that tap root was trying to grow straight up. I'm actually feeling more and more confident after studying the picture closer. I can see much evidence of vitality that wasn't there when I set it upright. It's driving me crazy to be all the way across town while my little one is striving to live.
