A committee hoping to legalize marijuana in North Dakota is having some trouble getting organized in Grand Forks.
The group LegalizeND has had success collecting signatures in Fargo and other parts of the state since mid-March.
But here in Grand Forks, while a few people have the forms they need to collect signatures, group leaders say more organization is needed to get the movement off the ground.
LegalizeND needs to collect more than 13,000 signatures by July 11 to get a vote for or against marijuana legalization onto the next ballot, but not all individuals are as committed to collecting as others.
Eric Olson, LegalizeND chair: "Anybody can say whatever they want about it, and claim that they're associated with us, or say something in our name. I guess unless they're somebody who is a listed sponsor, I don't know how seriously any of that should be taken."
Anyone eligible to vote in North Dakota is able to request a packet to collect signatures. There are a few individuals in Grand Forks seeking signatures, but so far none of the chairpersons from LegalizeND have scheduled official events in Grand Forks. They plan to hold a meeting in town in the next few weeks to gain some traction.
Olson: "When we have a meeting, people feel more involved, we get a larger number of volunteers, we get people coordinated to make sure they are at all of the major events." Cause we can get most of our signatures at public events, that's the most efficient way to do it."
Following the meeting of marijuana petitioners, you may see more people on the sidewalk seeking signatures.
Olson: "If we can find somebody in Grand Forks who is willing to do that, if a band wants to put on a show, or something like that, have a signing party, we'll definitely want to do something like that in Grand Forks, cause we can get most of our signatures at public events."
With a little less than four months to go, the committee has received 1% of the necessary number of signatures.
