Nevada County, CA--Nevada County's Supervisors could shut the door on medical marijuana dispensaries in Nevada County at their Tuesday meeting.
Supervisors are being asked to approve a June 23 recommendation from the county's Planning Commission to ban medical marijuana dispensaries from setting up shop in the unincorporated parts of Nevada County.
The move would block dispensaries from setting up anywhere in Nevada County, as both Nevada City and Grass Valley have permanent bans on the books, and Truckee's zoning ordinances prohibit dispensaries.
That Nevada County's medical marijuana patients cannot go to a dispensary in county limits — the closest is in Colfax — isn't safe, proponents for medical marijuana say.
If supervisors pass the ban, "the county is not providing safe access, or any access," said Kirk Shults, an Alta Sierra resident, retired pharmacist and medical marijuana patient who suffers from gout. "The medical marijuana business here is the most unorganized, most unregulated industry. I don't want people to worry about who grows their medicine, or how they grow it."
District 3 Supervisor and Chair Ed Scofield, who represents Shults' district, isn't sure where medical marijuana patients get their medicine, but is aware of the dispensary in Colfax, he said.
"There are a lot of medical needs in this county," that are not met here, Scofield said. "A lot of people have to drive off the hill for their medical needs."
Backing the ban are Nevada County's law enforcement community, including Sheriff Keith Royal and District Attorney Cliff Newell, who each spoke at the June 23 planning commission meeting in favor of the action.
Dispensaries would provide a central location for crime to occur, as a dispensary would draw other dealers looking to undercut its prices, and juveniles looking to buy marijuana, Royal said.
Supervisors are scheduled to discuss the matter at their 1:30 p.m. afternoon session. Their meeting begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Eric W. Rood Administrative Building on 950 Maidu Ave.
