A 15-year-old student was arrested on suspicion of possession and consumption of ganja, following an incident at the John Gray High School, on Friday 15 September, the Ministry of Education reported.
The Ministry said seven students fell ill as a result of "eating brownies laced with ganja," which one of the students had reportedly brought in to the school.
The Minister of Education, Hon. Alden McLaughlin expressed disgust over the incident. "This is a matter of utmost seriousness," he said.
"This sort of irresponsible behaviour could carry dire consequences, and it cannot be tolerated in our schools."
This unfortunate incident occurred in the midst of a transformation of the education system, which is winning increasing public support as it gathers momentum.
"Our reform process is currently yielding so many positive developments, that this news is both a shock and a disappointment. However we will not allow antisocial behaviour to dampen morale or cast a shadow over progress," added the Minister.
According to School Principal, Debbie McLaughlin, the students were all seen by the on-site school nurse, after they each complained about feeling ill.
When the cause of their sickness became apparent, the parents were called immediately. The students were promptly collected from school and some were taken to hospital. They have all since been released.
The student responsible was also suspended from school.
The Family Support Unit and Schools Liaison Officer are currently investigating the incident.
