South Carolina lawmakers were back in Columbia to kick-off their new legislative session on Tuesday and continue their controversial debate over the legalization of medical marijuana.
Local marijuana activist Emily McSherry told News 13, after speaking with legislative inside sources, most likely medical marijuana will be legalized by 2016 in The Palmetto State.
"We're looking at about 65 to 70 percent approval rating just from the folks we've spoken to in the House of Representatives as well as the Senate," McSherry said.
According to McSherry, "there are several medical marijuana bills as well as decriminalization bills in the works," including S672 and H4037. S672 may have more amendments added to it and H4037 still needs to pass full committee.
There's a long list of illnesses covered in both bills, McSherry said, including "cancer, epilepsy, and Alzheimer's."
But, some illnesses may be cut or more could be added to those lists, which may sound great for those who are suffering from those illnesses.
James Norment, a manager at the Phoenix Center in Greenville, who sees people suffering from addiction every day, said another addictive substance is not the answer.
"It would just be another justification possibly for some people to just feel euphoria as opposed to actually treating a potential illness," Norment said.
McSherry, however, said those who are ill may have already tried everything else and marijuana may be the last and only resort.
"If you are moving past what the FDA has done for you, and what you've been able to do, and still need help; cannabis may offer that relief for you," said McSherry.
McSherry's organization, Cannabis Forward, will be holding an educational forum about medical marijuana at The Meeting Spot at Greenville County Library at Heritage Green on Sunday, January 24 at 2:30 p.m. The event is free to the public.
