The agency charged with implementing Washington's new legal pot law is seeking consultants to provide expertise the state lacks in matters such as marijuana quality and consumption habits.
The Washington State Liquor Control Board will be drafting rules and regulations to implement voter-approved Initiative 502 in the months to come.
The board on Thursday afternoon issued a formal "request for proposals" looking for consulting services in four categories: product and industry knowledge; product quality standards and testing; product usage and consumption validation; and product regulation.
Consultants can bid in any or all of the categories. Experience as illegal growers or sellers would not disqualify them, according to liquor board spokesman Brian Smith. The state would negotiate contracts to compensate winning bidders for their services.
Potential bidders can question state officials at a Jan. 30 conference in Tacoma, with exact time and location still to be determined. Feb. 15 is the deadline for bids, with contracts awarded the following month.
Smith said 50 potential consultants downloaded the full state request for proposals in the first hour it was posted. To see the full request you must register as a vendor here.
In related news, the board begins a series of statewide pot forums next week, aimed at collecting comments from the citizenry about the new law. A Seattle forum is scheduled for Thursday at City Hall, with public testimony starting at 7 p.m.
