Squalid's First Grow - Hydro - Purple Larry OG

Squalid

New Member
Well after browsing the site for the past couple months I decided it is finally time to start my first grow journal and track the progress of my first run. I have learned so much from other members journals on this site that I am hoping that someone might find something useful on my journal as well.

With this being my first grow I am sure there will be plenty of ups and downs, but I am ready to take it head on and try to soak up as much knowledge as possible along the way. I have already invested a large chunk of my savings into this endeavor, so all the help and advice i get will be greatly appreciated. Please do not hesitate to put in your two cents!

A little background on myself. I am a 24 year old medical marijuana patient. I had a bad injury about 5 years ago on a dirtbike that left me with a shattered femur. They placed a titanium rod inside my femur and a couple pins in my hip and knee. The pin in my hip is constantly rubbing against the bone and scar tissue causing me constant pain. After kicking my prescription pain killer dependancy, I turned to marijuana to provide relief for my pain. I fell in love with this amazing plant and the rest is history. I was inspired by one of my clients at work, who turned out to be an amazing grower. After seeing the meds he was producing for himself and other patients I had my medical card and authorization to cultivate 3 days later.

Alright then lets start with the room itself. This is a spare bedroom I have in the basement of my house. All venting/ductwork is vented to the outside of the house via a window panel I made out of 3/4" MDF and A/C duct boxes. The outside of the window is covered with a 3/4" foam insulation sheet that has a mylar backing facing out, and the side facing the window is covered with panda film(so i don't have to look at ugly foam) There is also a nipple in the window panel that leads directly into the window well drain. All my reservoir changes are made using this as my waste line.

Now lets start with the equipment in the room.

Lighting is provided by 2 Lumatek 1000w Digital ballasts. The ballasts are mounted on a synthetic "peg board" that allows air to circulate all around them. They stay nice and cool throughout the day. The ballasts are connected to 2 Blockbuster 8" reflectors and power 2 Advanced Nutrients Red Diamond 1000w HPS bulbs.

Power for the room is ran off of a dedicated 100 amp sub panel that I installed in the room. I figured this would provide more than enough power for future expansions. Both ballasts are hard wired at 220 directly into an intermatic mechanical time clock. You will notice my outlets are getting a little crowded and I plan to add a couple other receptacles to clean everything up a bit. The A/C unit is wired to a dedicated 20 amp breaker and the other outlet is wired to its own 15 amp breaker.

Ventillation for the lights is provided by a 10" inline duct fan running around 750 cfm. There is also a 12,000 BTU Air Conditioning unit that keeps the room between 77-81 degrees with the lights on, and I can get it as low as 69 with the lights off.

The main tent I am using for flowering is a 5' x 10' tent. Inside of this tent is a Titan Flo-n-Gro system running 12 buckets from a 55 gallon reservoir. Inside of the reservoir is a 10" air stone and a circulating pump to keep everything aerated and moving.

Now onto the Plants.. The clones were sourced locally from another grower. They are a Grand Daddy Purps x Larry OG from Cali Connection Seeds. I took a gamble with clones from another grower, but I am hoping that the genetics turn out to be what he claims.

The clones are currently on day 10 of flowering. The pictures I will post first are of day 7. I am still trying to get a handle on the camera settings to try and combat the orange hue on all of the pictures.

These photos were taken today (day 10) and are a little better than the first set. The camera settings are still giving my trouble, but at least my plants dont look dead...

In addition to the plants in the flowering tent, I have 3 mother plants that are growing in a separate 4' x 4' tent. There are 2 DNA Genetics "Martian Kush" and 1 DNA Genetics "Cannadential" These plants are in a GH Rainforest 318 aeroponics unit. They are absolutely massive and were root locked together before I could transplant them into another system. So for now, they will stay in there. The plants are doing amazing and I wish they werent getting so big. But constant pruning keeps them somewhat at bay. Lighting is provided by a 4 foot 6 bulb T5 running 6500k lamps. a 6" inline fan keeps the air in the tent fresh, and 2 small fans in the bottom of the tent provide airflow. There are 2 10" air stones in the reservoir to provide aeration. The Martian Kush mothers will provide clones for my next run. And the Cannadential will be turned out ofter that.

I am running Advanced Nutrients for both systems. I am running the Grand Master bundle minus a few items for the flowering plants according to AN's nute schedule, but they are running at about 75% strength.

All water tests are done with a Nutradip Tri-Meter. So far i have had very consistent results with this meter and it stays calibrated quite well.

Water is provided by an Eliminator 100 gpd Reverse Osmosis system.

Hopefully this wasnt too much of a cluster-fuck of information. If anything needs to be revised please let me know.

Final rundown of whats going on right now in the room according to the template on the grow journal sticky.

Purple Larry OG
Indica Dominant Hybrid
10 days into Flowering
Indoor Tent Grow
Hydro (ebb and flow buckets)
Medium is Hydroton
Two 1000w HPS Lights
Aircooled from outside of room
Temperature of tent is between 77-81
Relative Humidity stays around 55%
PH is generally around 5.8 (+/- .2)
A couple of thrips have been found dead. (alternating between neem oil and azatrol to control pests)
Buckets are Flooded 4 times daily. 3 with lights on, 1 when lights are off.
Advanced nutrients are used according to AN schedule. But PPM is slightly lower than they say at about 850.

Thanks for checking out my grow, hopefully i didnt screw up too bad making this journal. I hope you will all be around to follow along on this project of mine. I will try and update at least once weekly, more if I can!

The setup of the gods! You seem to have a very well thought out environment. Do you plan to use any CO2?

Sorry to hear about your accident. Great job kicking the pain killers! :high-five:

I wish you many happy grows with the Martian and Cannadential.

Thanks Doc! If it wasn't for all the information on this site and other members grow journals I would have made so many mistakes when laying out my room. I thought about doing Co2 enrichment at first but decided against it on this first run. I have already made some changes to the original plan (revised the ventilation to draw air from outside the room, keeping the tent sealed) in anticipation of running the Co2 on the next run. I figured I would try and simplify things as much as possible without cutting too many corners. And I am very excited to run the Martian Kush and the Cannadential! I have seen such amazing meds coming from DNA Genetics.

Thanks man! Yeah the tents are nice, but I think space is gonna be an issue. Especially if I want to expand this flo-n-gro unit. I would love to have a dedicated flowering room with no tents. Hmm maybe the bedroom next door to this one....

Just checked out your journals. Looks amazing! What are your thoughts on defol? Think I should thin these ladies down? And if so, when?

Just Popping in to give an update. Sorry I haven't been on much, I have a lot going on and just haven't had time to get on here. I have been snapping some pics though... Everything seems to be going good in the room so far. Had a slight magnesium deficiency early in week 3 of flowering. But took care of it and everything is looking good.

Week 4 has been pretty good so far. No trouble yet, all of the nugs are getting nice and frosty, and checking them out through the 60x scope they look amazing. Tons of trich production. the PPM starts around 1200 and finishes the week around 1500 if I don't add any water to the res.

I hope they start packing on some weight here soon. Only time will tell since I have no other personal experience with growing.

Just checked out your journals. Looks amazing! What are your thoughts on defol? Think I should thin these ladies down? And if so, when?

Sorry, I didn't see this question. I defol while in veg and I also defol on day 21 and day 45 of flower.

Saw read where it looks like your not refilling the res with water everyday. I would suggest doing that. The PPMs should go down and not up. also, after refilling to the high mark with water remember to adjust the PH if needed.

Sweet thanks for the info man! I did some defoliation last week (day 21) and just removed the leaves that were blocking bud sites that couldn't be tucked. I would say the res temps are usually around 70-74. I usually put a couple 10lb ice blocks in the res when I do a water change. My water temp coming out of the RO is in the mid 80s right now (damn summer heat), so the ice gets the temps down quick before I let the system flood the buckets. Ill take the pump out of the reservoir if you think it isn't necessary. I have a good home for it in a new flood table and res that I got.

Just popping on for a quick update. Everything is going good. Went to the lake for a few days and had someone look after my crop. Came home to 24 dead cuttings that were rooting. One of the side vent covers on my humidity dome fell off and the guy looking after the plants didn't notice it so they were bone dry and dead the next day. Cut 24 more clones for the next run and they seem to be doing good. Also came home to see a bunch of my branches were drooping pretty badly (almost to the breaking point) under the weight, so I started stringing everything up that was drooping and did a bit of defoliation. Also had some slight nutrient burn at the end of week 5. But nothing too major. Heres some pictures from the end of week 6. Hopefully 2-3 more weeks and I can start flushing them. The smell is amazing, a very pungent kush smell. Trich formation looks amazing under the scope.
