SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Springfield City Council has rejected a suggestion that it encourage Missouri lawmakers to enact a medical marijuana law.

The council voted 6-2 Monday night against a proposal offered by Councilman Doug Burlison. He told the council that he thought it was a travesty that people who are suffering from medical conditions can't have marijuana that might help.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that other council members were vehemently opposed to the proposal.

Councilwoman Cindy Rushefsky said she didn't want police to have to determine if marijuana was being used legally or illegally.

Other council members said it was an issue that should be dicussed by the entire community – and the state.
