On Tuesday, a postal inspector noticed a package that he suspected might contain drugs. On Wednesday, the 60-year-old Quincy man to whom it was addressed denied knowing it contained 15 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $30,000.

Angel Rios Colon, who lives at Wollaston Manor at 91 Clay St., faces charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

The package was sent from Montrose, Calif., and arrived at the Wollaston Post Office on Tuesday and immediately raised suspicions, police said. Colon tried to collect it Tuesday but was told he couldn’t have it because he didn’t have an ID. He asked to have it delivered to his apartment building where he lives with his parents, on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, a postal inspector called State Police who brought a dog trained to sniff out drugs to the post office. The dog, Axel, was given an array of packages to go through and hit on the one addressed to Colon, police said.

The postal inspector, posing as a carrier, brought the package to Wollaton Manor just before noon Wednesday. Colon was standing outside in front of the building and signed his name for the package.

That’s when Quincy and State Police moved in and asked Colon if he knew what was inside the package. He denied it, said he was abandoning it and allowed officers to open it, Quincy police Capt. John Dougan said.

It contained a 5-pound bucket wrapped in paper towels soaked in ammonia, which is a common method of trying to mask the smell of marijuana, police said. The bucket held about 15 pounds of the drug, police said.
