As the debate on cannabis continues nationwide, WVU holds its first Strategic Cannabis Conference.
Speakers at the conference Thursday discussed the medical and industrial uses of hemp, a cannabis plant.
The federal Farm Bill of 2014 authorized hemp production in West Virginia for research purposes, but some speakers at the event called for even fewer cannabis regulations in the state.
They say industrializing hemp could boost the state's economy.
"Hemp has a great, diverse potential of things it can do for our state," said Morgan Leach, who organized the conference. "First and foremost, it's a healthy food. Second of all, it's used in a host of downstream industries and manufacturing, but then it also has the ability to reclaim surface coal mine lands and return those lands to a productive state."
Cannabis is currently legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia.
