Colorado Springs, Colo. - This school year, many districts will likely have new policies that allow some forms of medical marijuana on campus.

District 20 said its new policy has already been approved. Other districts 11 News spoke to on Wednesday said they're doing the same and choosing not to opt out.

Parents like Jennie Stormes have been fighting for this change for a long time. Her son, Jax, uses cannabis for his severe seizures.

New policies would allow only certain kinds of non-smokable marijuana to be given to licensed students on school grounds.

"There is a no smoking ban at schools anyways...this is controlled, this is me coming to the school as a caregiver," Stormes said.

District 49 began working on their medical marijuana policy before state law required it, which has also been approved by its school board.

Districts 11, 38, 2 and 3 have policies in the works that will be in front of their boards before school begins.

District 20 said its policy will be implemented this school year.

"If it helps the child and makes them be able to attend school and live a normal life, why not?" said parent Denise Barton.

It's important to note: before medical marijuana can be brought on campus, it must be approved by the school board.
