TRINIDAD & TOBAGO - An exercise to find an escaped prisoner in Sangre Grande on Thursday night, led officers of the Eastern Division Task Force to discover a marijuana field valued at an estimated $250,000.

At about 7 pm, a team of officers headed by Corporal Nicholas Vialva, went to Quash Trace, Foster Road, Sangre Grande, in search of Kevin Kanhai.

This was based on inquiries which were made earlier in the day. However, instead of finding Kanhai, they stumbled onto a five acre field of fully grown marijuana trees. The officers estimated the field to contain approximately 6,000 fully grown marijuana trees. A nearby camp also revealed some 600 seedlings. The officers called in the find, and orders were reportedly given by ASP Leroy Brebnor to destroy the field. Some of the plants were seized for evidential value, while the remainder of the plants were torched.

However, as the officers were leaving, they noticed two men approaching the site. The officers identified themselves, and the two men ran off. A chase ensued but the men were able to escape into the forests of the Northern Range.

The plants were taken back to the Sangre Grande Police Station, and warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two men.

Kanhai, however, was not found. He had been reported missing earlier in the day by officials from Sangre Grande District Medical Hospital. He was charged on Wednesday, last, by police for arson, malicious damage, and wounding with intent. However, before he could be brought before a magistrate, he reportedly began vomiting blood and was subsequently admitted to the hospital where he stayed until his escape on Thursday morning.
