soil sterialization question

When growing in soil is it possible or advisable to first sterilize the soil by baking in an oven?

I used some top soil from the yard and had a good result, however I was concerned that the soil may have contained some unwanted pests that could present problems in the grow room.

I didn't have any problems, but in the future, if I baked the soil first, then I would not have to worry about the possibility of bringing insects or other problems into the grow room.

what do you think? or am I being too paranoid?

GOOD soils are usually already sterilized. But most out there seem that they can be used out of the bag, but the additional step of sterilization doesn't hurt.

Soil taken directly from your yard will most likely contain pests, or unwanted random outdoor seeds, and sterilization is definitely recommended.

I haven't done it but I looked into it and apparently it stinks like crazy if you do give it a try!

I guess I was lucky - I did not have any problems with bugs or such. The soil was from a pile of top soil that I bought from the local landscaper.

I try to keep the grow area clean and check the plants frequently for care.
