Smugglers Abandon 339 Pounds Of Pot Near Rio Grande City

Smugglers ditched a truck filled with marijuana Friday afternoon, leaving behind 339 pounds of marijuana in a neighborhood near Rio Grande City.

Border Patrol agents spotted several people carrying bundles across the Rio Grande at about 6 p.m. Friday near Refugio, an unincorporated community east of Rio Grande City, according to a news release.

While agents conducted surveillance, the subjects loaded bundles of marijuana into an old Dodge truck.

Agents later found the truck abandoned near the intersection of Hidalgo Avenue and Acapulco Street, according to the news release. Border Patrol searched the neighborhood, but couldn't find the driver.

Agents turned 339 pounds of marijuana over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and seized the truck.
