Sovak police have uncovered a major marijuana plantation and detained eight men from Austria and Hungary, a police official said Thursday.

The plantation, concealed in an abandoned meat processing plant near the city of Nitra, 76 kilometers (47 miles) east of Bratislava, was capable of producing some US$236,000 (€184,000) worth of marijuana every three weeks, said Jan Packa, the head of Slovak police.

"This is the largest marijuana plant uncovered in Europe in more than a decade," he said.

Packa one of the men arrested headed the company that was allegedly established as a cover. If convicted, the eight are facing up to 20 years' imprisonment.

The drug dealers "were growing a so-called bonsai variety of marijuana which is nine times stronger than the common breed," he said.
