The Siskiyou County Medical Cannabis Co-Op was raided by sheriffs on Sept. 1st. The co-op's director, Marie Matlock, says that police destroyed 3 small personal use gardens with a total of 19 immature plants for herself, her husband, and secretary, plus 34 clones belonging to the 180-member co-op. The raid took place at her home in Weed, CA.
The Siskiyou County Medical Cannabis Co-op, which has been in operation for 7 years, is the only known patient's coop in this remote northern part of central California. It is not a dispensary. Patients in the co-op grow and share medicine among themselves. Matlock says she assumed her activities were entirely legal.
The raid appears to be in violation of both Prop. 215 and SB 420. The latter explicitly states:
Section 1(b) It is the intent of the Legislature, therefore, to....
(3) Enhance the access of patients and caregivers to medical
marijuana through collective, cooperative cultivation projects.
SB 420 Senate Bill - CHAPTERED
Matlock says she was told she would be charged with cultivation. Cal NORML regards raids on cannabis co-ops to be lawless and illegitimate. "Ten years after passage of Prop. 215, it is a disgrace that police are continuing to bust medical marijuana coops," says Cal NORML coordinator Dale Gieringer.
