Should Feds Enforce Marijuana Ban In Massachusetts? Voters Say No In New Novus Group

Massachusetts voters believe federal officials should not enforce a ban on marijuana, according to a new poll from the Novus Group. US Attorney General Jeff Sessions opposes marijuana legalization as polling and voters show growing acceptance of the controversial substance across the country.

Massachusetts voters legalized marijuana for recreational use in 2016, four years after approving the substance for medical use. Marijuana remains illegal at the federal level.

In the Novus Group poll, 62 percent said they oppose enforcement of federal marijuana laws over state laws.

Thirty-two percent said they support Sessions and the Trump administration leaving the door open to federal enforcement.

Four percent said they had no opinion.

Novus Group, a strategic consulting firm, polled 414 Massachusetts voters between April 25 and April 27. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.8 percent.

Massachusetts lawmakers are working on an overhaul of the marijuana legalization proposal voters passed in 2016, 53.6 percent to 46.4 percent.

Marijuana is broadly legal in Massachusetts for adults who are over the age of 21.
