New businesses spring up and grow quickly when legal marijuana comes to a state. In Colorado 18,000 jobs related to the cannabis industry were created in 2015. In Washington state, a new Seattle company, Pacific Century Holdings, has established a $50 million investment fund to buy commercial real estate assets that meet the regulatory requirements of Washington's legal marijuana industry. Nevada entrepreneurs should expect to see both opportunities and competition immediately.
The prospects for small businesses in Nevada go beyond cannabis growing and selling to a range of marijuana-adjacent businesses including security, technology, packaging and public relations. Krista Whitley, CEO of the Las Vegas-based Social Media Unicorn, which advises cannabis companies, said “We see tremendous success tying into local events or conferences happening, especially in Las Vegas.” Websites like Kush Tourism already list cannabis-friendly hotels and other lodging in Nevada that will allow legal marijuana consumption.
As states open up to legal marijuana sales, local governments try to learn from the experiences of the states that came before them, but it can often be a scramble to put the rules in place before the first day of sales. The uncertainty can leave entrepreneurs on edge.
But for all the excitement and uncertainty legalization generates, cannabis entrepreneurs still need to focus on business fundamentals, according to those in the industry. Understanding customers and engaging with them is critical says Braly Joy, General Manager of Remedy, a Las-Vegas based maker of traditional flower, medicated capsules, various extracts, and the Remedy vape pen. “The more that you can connect with cannabis consumers in an authentic way, the greater the brand loyalty that you will build.”
