Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador has made the rules more lenient for students living in residence who are caught with small amounts of marijuana.
Last year, students caught with one joint were thrown out of residence.
Now student union officials say getting caught with marijuana would get a student in residence a fine, and a warning that being caught again could get them kicked out of student housing.
"People do understand there are university students out there who smoke marijuana," said student union representative Cameron Campbell. "I think by still saying that it's wrong and still having disciplinary action that's enough to reinforce that you shouldn't be smoking it, but to go as far as to remove somebody from their place of residence is going too far."
The rule change only applies to on-campus housing and not other parts of the university.
Memorial has campuses in St. John's and Corner Brook.
