Searching for new posts

Hey 420 mag. I love the new layout but I am having trouble with using the search for new posts function. Under settings>new posts I get the message "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms". I think it worked for me the first few times I have used it but then now all I get is the error message. I am using chrome and didnt have this problem with the old layout which leads me to believe it is not a browser issue but could be wrong with that.

I was having to dump the cache to get the button to reset for awhile, but now it seems to reset after an hour (or currently for me, and I'm using Chrome also).

I couldn't even find it.

Under settings>new posts

Aha! Thank you. I'm not sure why it's listed under Settings - I just hadn't thought to look there. I would have expected that one to cover the things that generally fall under our User CP (BtW, so THAT'S where the new link to our User CP is hiding, lol - I'd just been landing on mine because I was smart (lucky?) enough to have bookmarked the User CP page.)

I have had... a degree of difficulty learning new things since the '80s due to an injury. Looking back... I have been very, very lucky - because I began this life being blessed with a great deal of ability in this regard, often - in the past - being able to pick things up far quicker than most, either from seeing a thing once or even from just hearing a vague description of how to do it. Which equated to me ending up being about average, I suppose. But as time went on, things got worse for me, to the point where now I "occasionally" have to be told/shown a thing multiple times (and still sometimes manage to screw it up). So please don't take this as an insult, or assume that everyone feels this way, but this new layout is, at times, very confusing for me.

OtOH, my cognitive ability seems to be roughly comparable to what my mother's was when she was, IDK, 65 years old (I'm only in my late 40s, BtW). And we seem to have more and more older members, both as a result of time passing and our (once-)younger members aging, and due to more and more of the elderly learning the FACTS about cannabis in terms of its great ability as a medicine. So I guess you could look at me as a friendly tester for how the old farts in the audience will react. IDK, though, come to think of it... I mentioned my mother. She's in her late 70s now, totaled her previous car about a year ago, and had to get a different one - and she still often has to get out of that car, look at the headlights, get back in, try again, rinse/lather/repeat until she stumbles upon the correct setting to turn her headlights on ("Mom, again, it's OFF/PARKING/HEADLIGHTS, just like every other car you've had in the past 40-50 years."). So maybe my issues do not properly mimic those of our elderly? Then again, about three years ago, Mom asked me, after a doctor appointment, what "pre-dementia" meant, so maybe it's her who isn't the best representative?

I get the message "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms".

I'm glad you were able to figure out your issue, both because I wouldn't have wanted to comment in your thread before you did - and because I was just able to successfully use the New Posts link.

BtW, has anyone seen the "Today's Posts" link, lol? I didn't really use that one, but I assume that some members probably did.

I understand that this is a transitional period and that, like with so many other things/situations, there will be "growing pains."

There is just the one, or currently anyway as I have heard nothing on it. Used to be there was three places I could pull up "new posts", so I could technically search every 20 minutes as it/they don't reset for an Hour.....so now you can use it once an hour or you have to dump the cache on your Browser to reset it. Hoping they give me one more button personally to use again as don't like dumping my cache all the time ;) but in theory the Bots not supposed to be an issue once everything new in place albeit I"m a pessimist by nature so "I will believe when I see it" ;) or guess "when I don't see it"

There is just the one

No worries. As I mentioned, I didn't use the Todays Posts link; I was asking for the (hypothetical) others who did. I like the New Posts one because it lists posts that I haven't read even if they were made prior to my last visit, instead of being coded to assume I read every post, every time I visit the forum. It also does not require that those posts be created within the previous 24 hours (as I guess the Today's Posts search routine did). Ergo, in my mind, the New Posts link is vastly superior to the Today's Post link anyway.

IMHO, you are right to be, if not skeptical, at least somewhat pessimistic in that regard. I have no reason to suspect that it (whatever it is) won't work in the short term. But I cannot help but think that it is akin to attempting to build something that is idiot-proof. One may do so, of course - but the universe keeps insisting on creating newer and more improved idiots  . So, just like the maker of "idiot-proof" scissors eventually discovered that there's really no such thing learned, we'll probably eventually find that the spammers have found some new mechanism to annoy us. (And, when that happens, the staff will figure something out to deal with it, surely.)

Additionally, in this specific situation (spambots), it has been shown/proven in the past that not every spambot post on an Internet forum is merely (or even at all) the result of a halfwit spamming advertiser attempting to sell pirated video content / penis enhancement devices / escort services / mainstream products. Such things have been used as part of a means of communication between members of various unsavory groups (I'm trying to mention the number one group that the world is currently having issues with, one based in a warm sandy region, without actually mentioning it :rolleyes3 , because I try to stay under the radar and understand how keyword-based harvesting works). I forget the actual percentage that was mentioned in the white paper that I once read, but it was not an insignificant figure. Of course, it would also be possible on many forums (don't know about this one, specifically, as I haven't really thought about it, lol) to include some of those hard-to-detect tracking devices, so that when someone views such a post, he/she is also accessing some off-site tracking thing. Probably our forum owner/admins have already had thoughts like this one, which (one assumes) is one of the reasons that they forbid off-site image hosting and, instead, require our pictures to be uploaded directly to the forum and linked from there.

Sooner or later, one has to trust someone (or else one will end up hopelessly insane ;) ) . And I, the most paranoid individual that I know, trust Rob to think about this stuff, and to deal with such things for us. While I spend hours most days basically enjoying myself on the forum, reading and posting... he undoubtedly spends at least as much time thinking about how he can make our favorite virtual home not only more useful and usable - but also safer to use.

I ramble.
