State senators recently voted against a bill that would have allowed medical marijuana in South Carolina.
The bill, sponsored by Tom Davis (R- Beaufort,would have legalized the medical use of cannabis for patients suffering from conditions such as cancer, HIV, AIDS, PTSD, and chronic pain, according to reporting from WLTX.
Davis has been working on the bill for two years, according to WLTX.
"This is something that is providing real relief to people who are suffering," he told the Senate Medical Affairs Committee Thursday.
The bill was voted down Thursday, with senators saying the risks of increasing recreational medical marijuana use outweighed the benefits.
According to The Post and Courier, Committee chairman Harvey Peeler said "this bill would put us one step closer to Colorado."
Medical cannabis is legal in 23 states. Recreational marijuana is legal in four states and the District of Columbia.
Proponents of medical marijuana are not entirely dead in the water, however. A similar bill, sponsored by Rep. Jenny Horne, R-Summerville, is still alive in the House.
