Say What? Pat Robertson Wants Relaxed Marijuana Laws, More Prayer?

Televangelist Pat Robertson was making headlines Tuesday for two vastly different reasons. Reason No. 1: He wants to decriminalize marijuana. Reason No. 2: He says the tornadoes that have devastated parts of the Midwest could have been prevented if enough people had prayed.

As a result, Robertson found himself in the unusual position of being both mocked and cheered in the online world at virtually the same time. Robertson made both comments during recent airings of his "700 Club."

The televangelist said that "liberals" are to blame for punitive laws that put too many young people behind bars for possessing small amounts of marijuana.

"I just think it's shocking how many of these young people wind up in prison and they get turned into hard-core criminals because they had a possession of a very small amount of controlled substance," he said, according to a transcript of the show obtained by Law Enforcement Against Prohibition and posted online. "It's time we stop locking up people for possession of marijuana. We just can't do it anymore."

The transcript was making the rounds Tuesday to a surprised Twitterverse. "Words fail me," said one retweeter.

Meanwhile, Robertson was being lampooned and denounced in other circles for his comments about the destructive tornadoes that roared through the Midwest and the South last week, killing dozens.

Robertson was asked "Why did God send the tornadoes?"

He said that the victims were partially to blame.

"God didn't send the tornadoes," he said. "God set up a world in which certain currents interfere and interact with other currents.

"If enough people were praying, He would intervene. You could pray. Jesus stilled the storm. You could still storms."

Residents in Georgia said they were offended by the remarks.

"Personally, I thank God that I'm alive and that the damage wasn't greater," David Wilson told Fox 5 news. "I think that my neighbors are safe and not harmed in any way, although they've lost quite a bit of property. But this weather, I can't say this is God's fault."

On Twitter, the remarks were being mocked. "See? That's why Hollywood never gets hit by tornadoes. Its all the prayer," tweeted comedy writer Merrill Markoe.

Robertson, of course, is quite at home making eye-popping statements.

Over the years, he has suggested that the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were God's punishment for the U.S. toleration of and homosexuality. More recently, he said he condoned divorce when a spouse has Alzheimer's.

Yea, I thought you guys would get a kick out of this...lol

I'll say one thing about it though...At this point, I'll take an endorsement from where ever I can get it...TBH!?

This guy has millions of followers, so in that respect, I'll take it!

I do think he could use some herbs to bring him back down to earth though...lol

Hey! Maybe "prayer" is what we've been missing in our quest to legalize Cannabis? Who knows? Maybe the "church" is the answer we've been looking for all these years? What ever!? lol

He's made this statement in the past. It's not new. I wonder how many in the cannabis community would vote for Robertson for president since alot of them are one-issue voters. How about it you "righties"? Pat Robertson for president! Right?

I'm not a righty, but as a one-issue voter I will admit it would be really difficult for me to try and talk anybody into voting for him. Seems like a nice enough fellow, but has some strange ideas and perceptions as well.

I am a classical liberal, and I agree with 420s point: take the endorsement. Why some would see fit to take the opportunity to slam a principled but alternative thinker is beyond me.

See the big picture: there are some leaders today and future leaders from the religious right who can use this as cover for policy positions or reversals--whether these leaders follow Robertson or not.

Maybe Jesus is working His will through this man and others to get this planet moving in the right direction...because the world is really fucked up with a lot of haters and killers... and well, the world is not going to save itself.

So we disagree with some of his ideas, let's give this man a High five.

:high-five:

well i think its not so weird i mean ppl have prayed to win the lotto and thats not being out there isnt prayer just like wishing really hard for something i have studied many religions and prayer is thought ,all things were a thought before we made it real, i dont think prayer is weird per say, ol pat is an odd duck, but yeah many ppl follow him, so if hes gonna speak up for cannabis i'lll take it yeah buddy, 1 more for the cause, repeal is coming thank god lol :thumb:

Prayers aren't supposed to deliver winning lottery tickets or a Manning contract with the Broncos. Prayer is supposed to be aligning our will with the Lord's. I am not sure how well that works, but we do it as a family.

It is psychotherapy but the answers are all in the serenity prayer. We take the load off of us and put it on the Lord.

In the battle of "imaginary friends", our God is an awesome God.

I see it in my growing son. The need to have super heroes even though they are just mere fantasy. The need for God is in all of us. What pushes our love and belief in God out of our hearts is either self love or self loathing, both having to do with "self".

Tomorrow we visit Bonhoeffer and the importance of faith against socialist vegetarian dictators.

I haven't prayed for legalization, maybe I should.

I am for anyone who is for Cannabis!

So...Yea, I'm on the "Right"....I'm on the "Right" side for Cannabis!

Right? Left? Middle? Backwards? Forwards? Up? Down?...whatever?! Cannabis 1st! My Vote Is For Cannabis!

I look at the world, through the scope of what our world will be like AFTER Cannabis prohibition is FINALLY OVER!...Think long and hard about what that really means and get back to me. ;)

No politician, who is against Cannabis, will get my vote! Period!

People are dying horribly, others are needlessly rotting in prison, kids are missing their mommies and daddies...and so on and so on...etc...?

It's a vicious cycle that we just keep on voting for, to continue like "business as usual"...um?...Are we never going to take a stand!?

Are we just happy with the way things are? like a bunch of "Sheeple"?

If the Rev. want's to help snag some Christian votes for Cannabis? I certainly endorse his patronage to the cause...Especially from here in the "Bible Belt"!
