Saw some AMAZING buds today - How?

My cannabis mentor stopped by my house for coffee today. Also, to show me some amazing dispensary buds he bought.

2 half ounce bags, 2 different strains, both had a THC level of 27.5. My buddy has a medical marijuana card, so he paid $40 per half ounce, so the total purchase cost $87 for a full ounce plus tx.

But that wasn't the amazing part. It was the quality of the buds. As hard as I've ever seen. Honestly looked like they were carved out of wood and hand painted.
All the effort I put into my grows, and bud care, mine never look like that.

How do dispensaries get that appearance?

Genetics can affect flower structure quite a bit, well and need good lighting going on. Extremely tight flower can be done with chemicals, so varies on where you are and if they have chemicals not allowed by regulating authority. Also have to watch the % numbers as some list the whole cannabinoids numbers so it not the thc numbers but a sum of the numbers. Personally if it don't look natural I'm not really interested when dealing with Flower, as if it has a funky smell or doesn't look right I'm usually not interested. Some of the prepackaged stuff here you can't see or smell pending on the dispensary, but that mainly the "value bud" of the 15-$40 half ounce or ounce specials. But that just OR as they have a glut of it so the price totally is tanked, not sure how they all staying in business still. But yeah for me smell and affect I use to factor what I buy and less so on appearances.

Voodoo funk - stay away from it my friend and grow your own kind bud
I had some street Thai stuff that turned out to be coated in H/Meth and I got cranky after 7 days or so
At least if you grow it you know what it is :hookah:

Grow the largest and moistest buds you can. Trim at harvest instead of wait for the drying stage to finish. Take the still moist and trimmed buds and slowly roll them in the palms of your hands so that they compress a bit. Then do the dry stage the way you normally do.

The buds should be much harder when the dry stage is finished. It is sort of like what happens when making a snow ball. Grab some snow and make the ball. Most of the time it is still loose and will easily fall apart when it hits a wall or one of your friends in the back of the head. But, if you were to take the same ball of snow and compress it the result is a harder ball that does not fall apart as easily and might even hurt your buddy when it hits him.

Interesting comments.
They came in a beautiful package, double sealed. I handled the buds for several minutes, and couldn't take my eyes off them.

As I said, if you were someone unfamiliar with cannabis, you'd think they were carved out of wood, or poured from fiberglas or plastic.
So there's a chance these dispensary buds were treated with something?

Here's one of my buds I just grew and placed in Grove bags, and I think it looks ok. But mine looks like crap compared to what I handled yesterday. And to think, it's got great looks, and it's $40 an oz!

I would expect that companies whose existence is based on making a profit will go to signficant lengths to make a profit.

If "bag appeal" is a big issue so I think that growers will do what they can to create a product with a high level of bag appeal.

My nugs don't look all that pretty:

And I have a different perspective on "bag appeal":

my nugs used to be pretty But since I started growing again this year, I take a short cut and just trim the fans then just trim the sugars almost up to the bud. Saves a ton of time. Besides I give 95% of it away so I decided to just let them trim it up if they want it to look pretty. the 5 or so % I keep, the dabpress doesn't seem to care what it looks like.

I think your bud looks fine, and the fancy buds were $87 per ounce for fair comparison. They more than likely grew theirs in a greenhouse or similar with really great lighting, top genetics, and top dollar nutes.

My question is this... What is the big appeal of rock hard nugs? You have to break them up to use them anyway, so why is that important? I'm always more pleased with the medium ones that break apart nicely as I'm putting them in the grinder, vs the hard ones that just smash flat and have to be cut manually.

Point well taken.
But the eye appeal was amazing. I can't help but wonder if they weren't somehow artificially manipulated or enhanced?

Again, good point.

But I've been doing this for years. Have a really well appointed grow tent, with great lighting and supplemental lighting. Exhaust fan, air circulation. I'm retired, and spend more hours then I care to admit trying to keep my plants beautiful. But mine don't look like theirs.

Yea I'm sure they're not going to tell us their secrets either. I do know that even tho it is 'prettier' the dispensary weed I have bought always makes me cough more (than my own grown), even in my vape since I don't burn it anymore. I don't even know why it would be more harsh in the vape, but it is.
