Sangmang's Peanut Butter Breath, Jack Herer Grow #2

This will be my 2nd journal on the forums. This time I'll be training 2 plants in a 2X4 SCROG style. Both plants are started as clones.

Peanut Butter Breath
50/50 Indica/Sativa

Jack Herer
- Sativa dominant hybrid, this clone is from the best phenotype of 5 seeds I started with last grow.

Gear
1.5gal plastic air pots
2x4x6 @Mars Hydro tent
Phat Filter 6" -filter is in a scrub box filtering both my veg and flower tents
6" 440cfm exhaust fan
@Mars Hydro tsl2000 300w LED (flower)
(2) 2'x4bulb T5 6500k (veg)
RO filter with 40gallon autofill reservoir
Inline transfer pump to move RO water
DIY scrog nets with stands(1 per plant)
Hydro Halos
Ecoplus submersible pumps
Condensate pump(runoff)
Truncheon EC meter
Hanna ph pen

Nutrients/medium/pest mgmt
Emerald Harvest 3 part nutrients
GH CaliMagic
Roots excelurator gold
Voodoo Juice
Great White mychorizae
Royal Gold coco
Mosquito Bits(fungus gnats)
PureCrop1 (mold/mildew/pests)
Spinosad (thrips)
Yellow sticky traps

Method
Drip irrigation, drain to waste. I'll be feeding multiple times a day to keep the coco wet and prevent evaporation within the medium. Last grow I had problems with salt build up because of this coupled with feeding too strong.
SCROG. Each plant has their own 2x2 adjustable scrog net. Here are instructions if you're interested. They are height adjustable.

The Peanut Butter Breath clone I traded for had crazy tight node spacing but started stretching a bit more under the T5s

The PBB(left) was rooted first but soon the JH(right) caught up and eventually overtakes it.

I had to LST train them for a couple weeks because I hadn't built the SCROG nets yet.

For runoff I have corrugated roof on an angle into a gutter with a drain tube going into a condensate pump that automatically pumps into a bucket when it's full. Bucket gets dumped in the garden.

40 gallon tote for RO with a 1/2" bulkhead for pumping water to my nutrient res and a float switch to automate the RO filter.

That brings us up to date. Still filling out the scrog nets before I flip to flower and switch the T5s out for the Mars Hydro.

Currently im feeding every 4 hours to a little runoff. Im only feeding 400ppm total including 100ppm of calmag. I dont plan on adding anything else to the feed schedule, no PK boost no flavor enhancers etc. I don't understand that extra stuff and dont want to spend any more $ so I'm not going to mess with it. I used the rootzone stuff early on in veg to get the root system healthy and now I'm just sticking to base nutes.

This is basically my first time running multifeeds so there will be plenty of adjusting I'm sure.

I switched out the T5s for the LED today. Last grow the plants were pretty stressed when I switched the type of light and the light cycle at the same time so I'm going to let them adjust to LED for a little before switching to 12/12. Im starting the light 24" above and turned down to 25%

Jack Herer(left) has noticeably faster growth than the PBB(right)

For how cheap pk boosters are I would strongly recommend one for better a yield

I guess i don't understand how that works. I just assume that the 3 part nutrients are formulated to have everything the plant needs and the ratios are adjusted throughout the plants lifecycle so I guess I don't see how adding a bunch more PK and throwing off the ratios would help at all. And if I'm going to boost PK couldn't I just add more of the bloom nutes? Also I've never seen a side by side journal showing better results with the boost(although I havent looked very hard).

I'm not arguing or saying you're wrong or anything, I'm all ears. I just am inexperienced and afraid to throw more things at the plants that could end up confusing me and causing problems.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I'll do a side by side comparison grow myself soon.

Adding more of the bloom nutes would result in too much N being delivered to the plants, they don’t need as much N in bloom. When a plant is in flower/bloom it requires more Phosphorus and potassium. A PK booster is just that. Your right in saying that the A and B gives everything the plant needs. However I personally think adding a PK booster will give you a better end product in yield and potency.

I am currently noticing some interveinal yellowing in the newer growth. It sounds like it's possibly magnesium deficiency from what ive read but I could be wrong. I've only been adding about 100ppm calmag to my reservoir(using RO water) so I'll try bumping that to 200 and see if it clears up. Since I'm only feeding 400ppm total currently I think its a safe step to take.

I flipped the lights to 12/12 last night. Foliar fed with epson salts and made a new res with equal parts MGB. You can see in the pic that the bottle calls for flipping the grow and bloom amounts when you switch from late veg to early flower but I decided to feed equal parts MGB for this reservoir and I'll start the "early flower" ratio next one. Maybe unnecessary but it seems better to change slowly.

This res:
200ppm calmag
to 550ppm MGB(equal parts)

In a crowded 2x4 tent even the small 6" clip on fans tend to be a little strong when they're right up on the plants and I want some light air circulation 24/7. That, plus who doesn't want an excuse to DIY?

I picked up two 80mm pc fans and convinced my gf to let me dissect an old oil burner/mister thing for its power supply/jack. Some scrap copper wire and plywood for the stand worked out nicely and I think it gets the job done. They're sitting back right by the passive air intake.

Also, the epsom spray seemed to have helped and I think it was a combo of both Mag deficiency and some damage from lights on spraying because the interveinal stuff went away but the blotchy spots stayed. @Pat Puffer @TysonOG thanks!

I'm liking these air pots much more than fabric pots. I'm sure they're probably comparable efficacy-wise but they're easier to handle and I like that the medium is raised an inch or so off the bottom. The roots are very happy in there.

Im kicking myself for allowing light leak into my nutrient reservoir last grow. I was confident that the small hole on top of the res which was by a window was ok and not the cause of my constant ph drift upwards. Now that my res is in the basement and completely covered my ph stays exactly where I leave it and I am having to clean it wayy less often.

Light is now at 100% and about 18" above canopy and they seem ok with it. New growth looks a little pale so I bumped the calmag up to 250ppm and total feed up to 700ppm. Still feeding mostly equal parts MGB but a little more Bloom. I'll probably hand water with some root beneficials tomorrow.

Also I moved a 6" fan above the light facing down to heat the plants a little(30 on 30 off) and my below canopy fans stay on all day and 15min per hour at night.

I had the same issues and I worked it out that they usually need 300 ppm of CalMagxtra when using ROH2O. Peanut butter breath is an amazing smoke!

Yeah I bumped it up to 250 last res and still seeing same thing on the new growth. I'll try 300 and then look elsewhere if that doesn't change things. I'll probably spray them again too. I see your calmag has a 4% N, does that affect your normal ratios at all?
Yeah I'm really liking how this PBB is growing, a little slower but much tighter node spacing than my Jack Herer.

You know now that you said that about the 4%nitrogen. That could explain why I think I had a nitrogen overdose and had a lockout of calcium/magnesium/phosphorus availability. After I started raising the PH during flushing with ROH2O things got better quick with the runoff ppm. I’m keeping the CalMagxtra @250-280ppm now.

Nice, yeah its weird how different the N content is in different calmags. I don't love GH as a company but I use their CaliMagic cause its only 1-0-0.
