I needed to take cuttings to know the sex and i was out of rooting compound. I did a little research and found what others had done in the past.
So I'd like to confirm you can root cuttings/clones with fresh aloe vera. First clone to root in 7 days, the last at 21 (different plant)
The process:
i took a few pieces (about 15cm) from a healthy aloe vera plant. When i cut it the liquid was transparent and didn't smell bad. (i can't confirm using yellow smelly aloe vera from a dehydrated plant)
I used a knife to take off the points on the sides and then removed the flat bit and scraped out all the goo.
I blended this with some distilled water then filled the cups which were labelled for each plant. I didn't adjust the ph.
I took cuttings from each plant, trimmed them and placed them in their respective cups for 6 hours.
In the meantime i soaked the rockwool cubes in RO water, i added formulex so it was 0.2 E.C and set the PH at 5.5.
After the 6 hours i shook the excess water out of each cube being careful not to destroy the structure of the rockwool. I scraped more fresh aloe vera and dropped some goo into each hole of the cube. Placed the cuttings into the cubes and then into a propagator. I waited a week for the first signs of life! The propagator was in the grow room without a dedicated light.
I will definitely use this method again! I will keep rooting compound just incase it's not a good time to take any of the aloe vera plant.
