PROVIDENCE, R.I.–A West Warwick man licensed by the state to grow marijuana has been indicted on charges of growing over 180 plants -- more than seven times the number permitted by Rhode Island's medical marijuana program.
Erik Johansson was indicted Wednesday on federal charges of conspiracy and cultivating marijuana. The 48-year-old was arrested last September after police discovered 183 marijuana plants in his home.
Rhode Island's medical marijuana program allows licensed "caregivers" to possess up to 24 plants.
The state recently suspended plans to license three medical marijuana dispensaries after Rhode Island's U.S. District Attorney Peter Neronha (nehr-OH'-nuh) warned that people involved with those dispensaries could face prosecution under federal drug laws.
Johansson's attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
