The Rhode Island House has endorsed a compromise intended to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to open without the fear of federal prosecution.
The House voted 64-to-7 in favor of the legislation Wednesday. The Senate passed its version of the bill last week. State legislators approved the dispensaries so patients in the state's medical marijuana program could have a state-regulated place to obtain medication. But Gov. Lincoln Chafee blocked the three facilities from opening last year after the state's top federal prosecutor warned they could face criminal prosecution for violating federal drug laws.
The compromise would place restrictions on the amount of marijuana the dispensaries may have on hand.
Once each chamber approves the other's bill the proposal will head to Chafee, who is expected to sign it into law.
