State Police are raising concerns about the state's medical marijuana program. At issue is the role of caregivers, who are licensed by the state to grow a small number of plants for medical marijuana patients
Rhode Island State Police spokesman Major Kevin O'Brien says last year police searched the homes of 21 caregivers. More than three-quarters of them were growing more marijuana than the law allows.
"It makes it very difficult for law enforcement to differentiate who's in compliance and who's not in compliance," said O'Brien. "We don't know who's in compliance until we execute that search warrant."
Providence senator Frank Ciccone has introduced a bill to regulate the growing and distribution of medical marijuana. But patient advocacy groups are protesting the bill, saying it would force patients to purchase medical marijuana from expensive retail centers.
