Foster's former Department of Public Works director who uses medicinal marijuana is suing after town officials fired him based on urine test results.

The Providence Journal reports that Robert O. Hohler says in his federal lawsuit he uses the drug to help ease chronic pain after a car accident damaged his liver and left him without a kidney and spleen.

Hohler accuses the town and its officials of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and the state's medical marijuana law by discriminating against him with unlawful employment practices.

He is seeking unspecified damages, back pay and the return to his former job or equivalent post.

Town officials did not respond to the newspaper's phone calls and emails seeking comment.

Council members didn't give an explanation for his 2013 firing.
