The 2016 presidential field could be the most doped-up in history.

The Marijuana Policy Project said Wednesday that eight of the 23 major presidential candidates have either admitted or strongly suggested to having tried marijuana at some point in their lives: former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Sen. Ted Cruz, former New York Gov. George Pataki, Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Bernard Sanders and former Sen. Rick Santorum.

Just six have said they never used it at all: former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, businessman Donald Trump and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

The rest have not given any indications, and did not respond to inquiries from MPP, which has created a list of what it calls the top 50 most influential marijuana consumers.

Topping the list is President Obama, who has admitted to drug use. Former President Clinton, husband of Mrs. Clinton, ranks fourth on the list – just behind Oprah Winfrey. Secretary of State John Kerry, Democrats' 2004 presidential nominee, is fifth.

Former President George W. Bush trails in 18th.

The crop of 2016 presidential candidates is rated second, with MPP's Mason Tvert saying their experiences are informing the current debate over legalization.

"Of the nearly two dozen major-party candidates running for president, fewer than one-third are willing and able to admit they never used marijuana," he said. "And one of them is married to the fourth most influential marijuana consumer in America. Times have changed and so have public attitudes toward marijuana."
