Recognizing Medical Marijuana, State Pharmacy Board Changes Its Legal Classification

Complying with a 2009 state law, the Oregon Board of Pharmacy last week moved marijuana out of the most-restricted category and down a notch on its list of controlled drugs.

For years, marijuana had been classified in Schedule I with other drugs, such as ******, that the law considers to be highly addictive and lack legitimate medical use. Since doctors can now prescribe medical marijuana to Oregon patients with state-issued cards, the legislature last year told the pharmacy board to reschedule marijuana into a lower class. The board put the drug into Schedule II, which includes drugs that have a recognized medical use but also a "high abuse potential with severe psychological or physical dependence liability." The change should have little practical impact on medical marijuana use or prescription.

The same 2009 law clarified that illegal *************** is a Schedule I drug, while prescription formulations of the stimulant for medical use fall into Schedule II.
