R.I. Gov. Chafee Signs Change To State Medical Marijuana Law

Governor Chafee signed legislation on Thursday making it clear that anyone working for a state-licensed medical marijuana dispensary must submit to an FBI background check.

Sen. Rhoda Perry, D-Providence, says she submitted the proposal after the FBI recently raised concerns about provisions lawmakers added to the state's medical marijuana law this year.

"Nobody knew it was an issue until we got the call," she said. "They needed those particular words."

Last year, the state Health Department selected three organizations to grow and sell medical marijuana.

But Governor Chafee halted the process amid concerns that federal authorities might raid them.

In response, state lawmakers made further changes to Rhode Island's medical marijuana law, including new restrictions on how many marijuana plants the dispensaries could grow.

That has allowed the state licensing process to resume.
