Question regarding supplemental lighting

I have a question regarding a GDP I am growing indoors. I was not seeing any color change while it was in the tent (straight 400w HPS w/ no supplemental lights). As soon as the ballast went out and they got sunlight for the first time, the hair started to change purple but now that they are back in the tent, it seems it is no longer changing colors. This brings me to my question, is it the UV from the sun causing my plant to take on the purple and if so, will adding a UV light to the tent encourage color change?

As far as scientific research goes, there is very little done on cannabis. The purple color usually shows in most strains as a response to cold weather stress. UV A & B is dangerous to plants to some degree, and in response they release defense mechanics. It is widely believed that increased resin production is one of those. What week are your plants in and what temps and amount of light in what space have you been giving them? It may simply be that they are not at the stage to start changing colors yet or that they have been stressed and are now showing those signs a little better.

Week 7 flower. 3x3 tent. 400 watt HPS. They were in the tent for 6 weeks when the ballast went out showing no signs of color. After the ballast failure and the plants were moved outside for a few days, the color change began in ernest. New ballast came in 5 days after the old one went out. I will post a picture when the lights come on tonight. As far as temps go, in the tent they range from 82 degrees @ lights off to a low of 71 when lights first come on. Outside temps are a little warmer, ranging from close to 90 during the day to the high 60's @ night if a good breeze is blowing in from the gulf. So not a dramatic variation and no cold exposure whatsoever. (Think South Texas aka Hell).
