Pushing to Legalize Pot

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Marijuana advocates are leading a statewide effort to legalize marijuana. Their hope is to get it on the 2012 ballot.

Backers need to gather about 86,000 signatures to put the question to voters.

A similar measure in 2006 was defeated in Colorado and a local marijuana dispensary expects the same outcome on this measure.

"I think we're a long ways away from legalization," said Joseph Fisher, manager, Rocky Road Remedies.

Fisher said a lengthy debate remains between the supporters and opponents of medical marijuana.

But Fisher is supporting the ballot proposal saying it could help those who are unwilling or uneasy about the process to get a marijuana card.

He also said legalization would like boost business at dispensaries.

Legalize2012 is having another open debate on language for the Colorado True Legalization Initiative on Aug. 10 in Denver.
