A survey is circulating asking Cherokee residents what they think of medical marijuana.

A group called Common Sense Cannabis is collecting information after tribal leadership said no to studying the pros and cons of personal, industrial, and medical marijuana on the reservation.

Chief Patrick Lambert cites epidemic levels of drug use already.

"I don't know anybody who it hasn't touched," said Vice Chief Richie Sneed. "And so, I fully support the Chief's decision on that."

Joseph Owle with Common Sense Cannabis is narrowing the focus now to just medical uses. "From what we've gathered, a majority of those respondents to our survey support medicinal cannabis," he said. "There's not as much support for personal use."

Owle says once the survey is complete, he'll submit the findings to Tribal Council.

"We're listening to our community members and also listening to our council members who also receive feedback. And we're pursuing a medical cannabis initiative and resolution," he said. "We're looking to provide our enrolled members and patients with access to that medicine for a variety of ailments."

For hundreds of years, the Cherokee have seen connections between plants and healing.

"Many of the council members expressed that they had spoken to many of their constituents who were supportive of the medicinal," said Sneed.

Owle says medical marijuana on the reservation could help cancer and epilepsy patients, and other ailments, and possibly bring other benefits.

"Medical cannabis isn't the only solution. But we think it is part of the solution to curbing opioid addiction and prescription pill abuse.

Owle said the survey results will be presented to tribal council in March
