The ballot measure to legalize medical marijuana in South Dakota has been thrown out, but supporters aren't giving up yet..

The Secretary of States' Office says that the initiated measure was rejected because it did not meet the required number of signatures to be placed on the ballot. A random sampling of the signatures determined that only about 9,000 of the over 16,500 signatures were valid. An initiated measure requires a minimum of 13,871 signatures to make it on the ballot.

New Approach South Dakota will switch strategy. The group behind the rejected petition drive says on Facebook that there is a "very small window to pull a rabbit out of our hats." The group is trying to get the medical marijuana initiative put into legislative format and get it sponsored by a state lawmaker in Pierre.
