Public Hearing On Outdoor Medical Marijuana Ban Set

A hearing has been set for March 26 about a possible ban of outdoor cultivation of marijuana within the city.

The ban targeting medical marijuana patients would restrict the growing of medical pot to the indoors of residential units and would be policed by city code enforcement officers.

The Planning Commission on Feb. 6 recommended City Council approve the ban, and during initial meetings last year the majority of the council indicated support for it. The ban requires an amendment to the city's development code.

The issue has divided residents in the Dana Estates neighborhood, where one resident has grown medical marijuana in his backyard for years. The resident, Chris Olsen, has threatened to take legal action against the city if it is approved.

Proponents want the law on the city's books before Mother's Day on May 12, which local growers say is the beginning of the growing season.

The City Council, which voted 5-0 Tuesday to have the hearing, will hold it starting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 1950 Parkside Drive.
