Officials at the Thomas C. Slater Compassion Center, soon to be the state's first medical marijuana dispensary, are hustling to buy high-grade medical marijuana to sell to its patients.
But the center is being very selective about what it will offer.
Joel T. Allcock, Slater's cultivation director, and Alexander M. Liebster, an indoor horticulturist, have rejected about 40 percent of the marijuana that certified patients and caregivers have tried to sell to them over the past two weeks.
It takes about 16 weeks to harvest a crop of marijuana and the Slater Center will not be able to have its own cannabis until August. In the interim, officials will be looking to buy marijuana. They have a rigorous screening process in place to test the drug.
