Protesting Walmart's Medical Marijuana Policy

The fight over medical marijuana in Michigan took to the streets on Friday.

Earlier in March, Newschannel 3 introduced you to Joe Casias, who was fired from the Walmart in Battle Creek after testing positive for marijuana.

Casias is battling sinus cancer, and has all the legal documentation required to legally use marijuana.

Recently, the Marijuana Policy Project called on shoppers to boycott Walmart, hoping to pressure the retail giant into changing its policy.

Friday saw another protest in Alpine Township.

Casias worked for Walmart in Battle Creek for five years, but was terminated after a positive drug test. Those who support him say employers are discriminating against law-abiding people if they fire sick people for following a doctor's recommendation to take medical marijuana.

Medical marijuana use is protected by law in Michigan if the patients have been approved for it, but employers, like Walmart, see Casias' case differently. They're sticking with a company police for what they call the overall safety of customers and workers.

However, the protestors out on Friday say Walmart and other companies need to change with the times.

Newschannel 3 again contacted Walmart for a response to Friday's protest, but we have not yet received a reply. In earlier reports, company leaders said they felt sorry for Casias, but couldn't hire him back.
