OROVILLE, Calif. -- Protestors crowded Monday's meeting of the Butte County Board of Supervisors over a proposed medical marijuana ordinance. Several hundred people showed up at the County Center in Oroville to protest the ordinance being considered by the supervisors.
The supervisors chamber was filled beyond capacity with more people waiting outside for their chance to speak out against proposed regulations on growing pot..
The ordinance would place limits on the number of plants that could be grown, ranging from two plants on parcels smaller than an acre to as many as 99 plants on lots that exceed 160 acres.
A use permit requirement is also included in the ordinance with fees as high as $1,200, a price medical marijuana users say effectively denies them rights granted under prop 215.
"This ordinance here today is going to kill patients," said ordinance opponent Nate Bradley. "We understand what they're trying to do which is to control something which, in their minds, has gotten out of control. But they're going to kill the people this bill was intended to protect."
After hearing public comment for several hours, the supervisors tabled the issue, and will bring it up again at a future meeting
The board of supervisors used Monday's hearing to listen to input from members of the public. After several hours of public comment they decided they needed more time.
Supervisors will revisit the marijuana ordinance at a future meeting.
