Iowa's new medical marijuana law could be expanded. The Des Moines Register reports that a bill has been introduced in the senate, allowing medical marijuana to be used for conditions other than chronic epilepsy.
It would also allow for the production and distribution of the drug. The Iowa Department of Public of Health would license four medical cannabis manufacturers, each of which would run three dispensaries. Currently, people must go out of state to get the drug, something critics say doesn't allow for Iowans to legally get the cannabis oil.
The bill would also allow other forms of medical marijuana, but would not allow it to be smoked. Governor Branstad has said in the past that he wants Iowa's law to have more time to work before it can be expanded.
Senate Democrats will discuss the proposal more on Tuesday.
