Dozens of people fired up over the state's marijuana laws hosted a cannabis cookout at Sedgwick County park Saturday afternoon.
They held a barbeque, hoping to drum up support to legalize marijuana. Organizers said it's time for lawmakers to let citizens decide.
"Well Colorado has a referendum in their law that allows for a state-wide petition voter-initiated," said Mike Golden, Fired Up Kansas founder. "Kansas doesn't have that same referendum for a state-wide. But they do have city-wide referendums."
Golden said the health benefits alone would be worth legalizing marijuana. But, he said the group's ultimate goal is full legalization.
"Ninety percent of pot smokers just want to smoke legally and not have to worry about going to jail," he said.
Fired up Kansas plans to have more gatherings throughout the year. They will be asking supporters to sign a petition in favor of legalizing marijuana. The petition will then be given to lawmakers in an effort to push the measure to a vote.
A medical marijuana bill never made it out of a Senate committee during last year's legislative session in Topeka.
