Oak Ridge police recently arrested a Knoxville man on drug charges and seized his car and money.
Officer Benjamin Haines arrested Tony Cortavius Gambell, 21, 2337 E. Fifth Ave., Knoxville, after finding marijuana in his car during a traffic stop.
Records said Haines stopped Gambell's Lincoln Towncar about 1:45 p.m. on Tuskegee Drive near Fire Station No. 3. He stopped the car after seeing that the front seat passenger was not wearing a seat belt, records said.
Gambell admitted to Haines that he had no proof of insurance on the car and Haines smelled the odor of dried marijuana, according to the report. Haines told Gambell that his canine partner, Figo, would sniff the car for narcotics and asked if any drugs were inside the car, records said.
Gambell reportedly handed Haines a small bag of dried marijuana, about 2.4 grams, from the driver's seat area. At that point, the officer told him he would search the rest of the car.
Gambell then said he had "1/4 pound" under the seat.
Haines found a bag containing four bags of marijuana, about one pound each, and arrested Gambell.
Gambell admitted the marijuana belonged to him and not his brother, who was also in the car. He was charged with possession of Schedule VI drugs for sale.
Haines seized the marijuana, the car and $85 in cash from Gambell and took him to the Anderson County jail. He was released from jail on Dec. 26 after posting a $5,000 bond.
