Pot Dispensaries Could Go Up In Smoke

According to an article in the Marin IJ yesterday, two pot dispensaries in Corte Madera could be forced to close if town officials have their way.

The town council voted unanimously this month, to begin legal proceedings to shut down Going Green and Marin Holistic Solutions, both dispensaries of medical marijuana. According to the article, officials said they were acting to close down the businesses in keeping with local ordinances and zoning. Currently, it is legal in the state of California to set up medical pot dispensaries but it is not legal under Federal law and many local laws.

Both Going Green and Marin Holistic vow to stay open past a deadline requesting that they be shutdown by June 25.

Marin has a half-dozen of cannabis dispensaries, including Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Fairfax, the Tree of Life in Novato, the Canna Care Cafe in Sausalito and the most recently opened Marin Wellness Center in Kentfield. The Novato and Kentfield dispensaries are in unincorporated Marin County and county officials according to the IJ, are making preparations to shut them down as well.

Supporters of the clinics, and cannabis supporters in general, will be watching with interest in November when Californians get a chance to cast their vote on an initiative that liberally decriminalizes casual use. The "Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010" would make it legal for California to grow and use pot for personal use, and would allow local entities the option to "legalize, tax and regulate production."
