A chemical compound found in marijuana can help a patient who experiences pain from drugs used as part of chemotherapy, a new study has found.

Researchers from Temple University's School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia found the compound cannabidiol, the second most abundant chemical in the marijuana plant, prevented nerve pain caused by the drug Paclitaxel in female mice.

The drug is used to treat breast cancer.

But researchers found that unlike THC, the other main chemical component in marijuana, there was no psycho-active effects, such as euphoria, increased appetite or cognitive deficits.

"Cannabidiol has the therapeutic qualities of marijuana but not the side-effects," researcher Sara Jane Ward said in a release about the study, which appears in the journal Anesthesia and Analgesia.

Cannabidiol also decreased tumours in the mice, Ward said.
