Popular local psychic, Venezuela-born Yesenia Gonzales was among a group of disgruntled Venezuelan nationals who last night engaged in a pot and bowl protest outside the Venezuelan Embassy in Port-of-Spain as they called for a recount of votes cast in Sunday's Venezuela election.
The protest was held outside the Embassy in Victoria Avenue and saw some of the protesters who were mainly women, loudly banging on pots and bowls with pot spoons in a protest act that was similar to Venezuelans who protested the results in Venezuela's capital, Caracas.
The protesters outside the Embassy are supporters of Venezuelan Opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles who narrowly lost to incumbent vice-president Nicolas Maduro, who acted as president since the death of Hugo Chavez from cancer on March 5.
Up to press time, about two dozens protesters were seen outside the Embassy including Gonzales. They waved Venezuelan flags while some banged on pots and bowls to show their displeasure. "We are protesting," said Gonzales. "We want them to recount the votes." She complained that the Venezuelan authorities moved too quickly to proclaim Maduro to be Venezuela's new President, without any recount, as was called for by Capriles.
"We felt Capriles had won," she asserted, "and that there was fraud." Gonzales alleged that hundreds of complaints of election irregularities, saying these had all been ignored by the Venezuelan election authorities. "Maduro is illegal," said Gonzales. "It is fraud. It is not a true, true democratic result."
