An anonymous source led investigators Saturday to an outdoor marijuana plant growing operation on Merchant Road, but police said they have not found out who is responsible for the drugs.

Police found 29 pots and a "sophisticated" cultivation system in a wooded area near the Merchant Road soccer fields, Lt. Paul Shastany said.

Only six of the pots contained healthy plants, the rest appeared to have been previously harvested, Shastany said.

"This was not just seeds thrown to the side," said Shastany. "It was adjacent to a stream so the water supply was there.
There was a sophisticated cultivation system and there were fertilizers and insecticides."

On Saturday, police received a call from an anonymous source at around 4 p.m. about several marijuana plants being grown in the wooded area, which is also close by the MCI-Framingham women's prison.

When police arrived, the caller was gone, but police followed footprints to where they discovered the drugs. The police found the 29 plant pots, but it looked as if whomever is responsible had already collected the illegal plants from most of the 23 pots.

"The plants were collected and will be stored as evidence," Shastany said. The plants have been sent to the Massachusetts State Police crime lab in Sudbury to be confirmed as marijuana, Shastany said.
